What are heatless curls?

The meaning is literal. It’s the way to curl hair without any hot tools (no flat irons, no curling iron, no hot rollers).

There is not much to say about this from the technical side. Women curl their hair heatless for centuries. Iron curler and hot rollers it’s not such an old invention. But as creative, as women are, we always found a way to make our hair look fabulous. Do not mention that using curling irons and straightener to make your hair look gorgeous can be an absolute pain to use, time-consuming and in the long run give you the opposite effect, heat damage. Your hair becomes dry, rigid, with split ends, and they refuse to style in any decent manner naturally. So you are stuck in this nightmare circle when you have to use hot tools to style your hair every day.
There are many ways/techniques to achieve curly hair without heat, and most of them you can do at least in several variations.
Easy, fast and gorgeous… Impossible is possible.
To be honest, only a few heatless curls methods listed below take more than 10 minutes to make. Some of them you will do in less than 3.

Do heatless curls damage your hair

“Ditch the Curling Iron and Save Your Hair”. Are heatless curls damaging? There are few things that you should be careful:

  • Do not cause pressure or tension to the scalp. Anything that feels unpleasant or painful should be redone.
  • Avoid curling wet hair as it may damage the structure of the hair cuticle, leaving hair prone to damage and broken ends, if you will not be careful.
  • Do not roll very dry-damaged hair without conditioner on small rods/tools. That’s very important for ends as they are more tend to be dry and break.
  • If you use tools, take care there are no sharp ages (plastic gadgets). Besides, curl will not be pretty, it will cause more breakage. Best to choose round appliances.
  • Avoid heavy gadgets that could cause tension on the roots.

How long does heatless curls last

Well done curls can last 1-3 days, if you will protect them during the night and regenerate a bit in the morning. This will take you few minutes, but it’s nothing compared to a new hairstyle every day.

For waves, it will be definitely less time, but it should easily last a day.

Heatless Curls Hair tips:

  • Smaller curls hold longer.
  • Longer the time you let curls curl, the longer-lasting effect. Overnight curls last more than curls made in one hour.
  • Cosmetics can make or break the effect. Moisturize your hair. Styling products are not needed, but can help. Thinner hair usually cannot take as much product.
  • Not every product is working the same for everyone. Find one that suits your hair.
  • It depends on your hair type and hair health. If you have naturally straight hair effect can be more temporary.
  • Healthy hair that is moisturised curls better.
  • PEH balance (Proteins, Emollients, Humectants) is important.
  • Curling bigger sections of hair at once will give you loose waves/curls, small section and small tools will curl the section in tighter curls
  • To get Voluminous Hair you do not need Volumizing Shampoo, only a good hair curl method
Protect your hair from heat always. If you use a hairdryer use cold air or heat protection, it’s the first line of defense against damage.

#14 — NO HEAT CURLS WITH FLEXI RODS BY CharmieJanee

What CharmieJaneesays about Flexi Rods:
“The BEST way to get super curly hair without having to put heat on it (In my opinion hehe). I’ve been curling my hair with flexi rods for the longest time, and it honestly does an amazing job for me. Especially for my flat straight asian hair! This method lasts all day and it to be honest it gets prettier and prettier through out the day because it turns into a really nice beachy waves effect by the end of the day. It’s also really inexpensive!”
