What's going on?

Have you walked with a friend and suddenly he stops, rich to the floor to find... money? Your first thought 'Why not me? It was right in front of me! I have bad luck.' Or do you know any of those successful people mysteriously get all their things done fast and easy? On the other hand, you have to wait in queues, deal with unpleasant people, and do not see an ounce of opportunity to change that? Promotions? Why is that? Why are you not a lucky person that works all these wonders? What is the secret sauce? Only lucky people can be Successful People? Are they more hardworking people? Maybe they somehow appear at the right time at the right place. Or perhaps they know some lucky charms with some serious magical thinking skill?

What is the secret?

Dr Richard Wiseman

The Luck Factor

Dr Richard Wiseman in “The Luck Factor” analysed from a psychological standpoint apparently irrational phenomena of advantage of opportunities aka luck. With the team, he studied hundreds of luckiest people and unlucky ones. To be more precise, hundreds of people with a lucky attitude (believer in luck) and a negative attitude.

Some believe they have luck and good things happen to them all the time, so they are always on the lookout for the next great opportunity, meeting, and chance coming their way. They trained their “lucky thinking” like every other skill. Others believe in the absence of luck that nothing good happens in “real life” to them, so the following bad news is expected.

Which group are you in?

Luckily no matter which type you are.

Here is how Dr Wiseman advice to Bring even More Luck into your day for life:

1. Maximize your chance opportunities. Notice, create and act upon possibilities pro-actively. If you act, you can make your own luck. Because chances to achieve something doing nothing are still 0. When you try 50 new things every month, there is significant chance opportunities that some of your actions will succeed in life and bring you some lucky outcome. Wiseman advises that it’s not the magic of being in the right place at the right time, as that’s quite random. It’s about the right state of mind (positive attitude). BS, you think? Imagine if someone has a job opportunity. Guess which version of you this person would approach you relaxed, smiling, with a positive attitude, or you grumpy, moody, radiating negative energy?

Not convinced? Wiseman goes a step further. He arranged a ‘Lucky’ experience by placing a $5 note in front of the coffee. Inside the place, examined will see four tables and four people. Only one of them will be a wealthy businessman and the rest more like ‘unsuccessful people’.
How experiment turned out? ‘Believer in luck’ picked up $5, ordered the coffee, sat next to the businessman, and started the conversation. A person who does not find him/herself lucky missed the note, order coffee, and sat quietly, avoiding spending time with people. As you may predict unlucky person described a time in coffee as uneventful compared to the first person who talked about their day and stroke of luck in a very excited manner. That’s how an optimistic person maximizes the opportunity, creating their own successful life.

How can that work for you? Build your strong ‘network of luck’. Become lucky by increasing the number of interactions that you make. Express relaxed and exciting attitude to life. The goal is to be open to new experiences and welcome them with confidence and an open mind. It’s how things just “happened”.

2. Listen to your lucky hunches. Aka, trust your “gut” feelings. Intuition… if you wish. Do you not have lucky hunches? Or any hunches whatsoever? That’s ok. As with every skill, you can practice and develop it.
A survey conducted on 100 respondents shows:

– 90% of lucky ones trust intuition with relationship issues and 80% financial decisions.

Why would you trust intuition? Human brain is way more brilliant than people give it credit. It analyses a ridiculous amount of data and experiences to create thinking patterns that make daily life easier.

It’s why you can immediately dislike somebody, just for the ‘face’ or avoid some nasty surprise because you felt that you should do or do not do something.

Listen to your lucky hunches.

3. Expect good fortune. Expectation about your future is critical in shaping your future.
How believing that – achieving your goals, creating a remarkable life, having meaningful time with people – will help you? ‘Lucky’ people can perceive far longer in a difficult situation or in face of failure than ‘unlucky’ ones. In this way, positive thinking helps you go through unfortunate events or solving problems.

Any proofs for that? One of Dr Wiseman experiments uncovered:

When received unknown puzzle with an unknown degree of solvability

—

Additionally, in the second group examined gave themselves much more time to solve it before dropping out.

So, Expect good things to happen to you. When problem arrives, keep going. You stand a better chance to win when you work hard on one project for some time than constantly testing new ones. You’re a lucky person. Problems come and go. Your attitude affects your chance for a successful life significantly.

60% 'unlucky minded' report puzzle unsolvable. Compare to only 30% in 'lucky minded' group.

4. Turn your bad luck into good. You can think that a bad situation has only bad sides. Contrary! In many cases, you can find few good things too. Or be lucky that situation didn’t turn out even worse.

Researchers run an exercise on mentioned two groups: Image, you are shot in the arm. How do you feel about it?
The unlucky group didn’t see anything good. “I was shot! What good can be about that?”
Lucky participants found themselves fortunate that they are still alive. “It could have been a headshot! And if you share this story with Newspaper, you may even make some money.”

Turn your bad luck into good.

In the end, your perception is your reality. Make your reality work for you.

Is luck a key to happiness or life satisfaction? No. But it can improve quality of life and range of performance remarkably. Improving positive energy doesn’t mean believing in luck charms.

Different kinds of lucky mindsets are cultivated right now, luck with karma or achieving Luck Through Spirituality. They often seem weird and too different from our lives to try. In contrast, Lucky Thinking method appears to be the least bizarre. It’s even a pretty popular option. So many people say, ‘I am lucky! I found money on the street!’, or ‘I am lucky that it didn’t rain’, ‘I was so lucky to be on time for my appointment, traffic was heavy!’

What worse can happen? People will tell you that you are too confident? or don’t know how ‘real life work’? Too optimistic, maybe? So maybe it’s time to change those guys?

Make a conscious decision about what successful life means to YOU. And GO for it! That will give you a strong sense of self-worth, confidence, resilient attitude and improve energy levels. No, not by wishful thinking only. But by doing what you like and appreciate.

Make an outlook on life… could you use a bit more luck?
