Staying active while traveling

When you’re travelling a lot or for a longer period, you do not want to lose your results neither the habit of regular training. And you know how tough it is to stick to a fitness routine starting from the beginning.

Travelling, tourism, visiting the city or business trip meetings can leave very little room in your schedule for health and exercise. Dedication, planning and choosing smart – activities that fit your possibilities — can help you to stay in shape and ease the pain of few kilos caused by all the local food you want to try.

Consider these travel workout tips.

Do the research

Depend on which type of training regimen you would like to have, check the availability of:

  • hotel gym,
  • their equipment (if there is something more than a stationary bike),
  • swimming pool,
  • training schedule if they have group activities,
  • hotel fitness centers – some resorts cooperate with local fitness centers that you can use as a guest of the hotel.

If there is no info on their website, just send them a message. You will know what to be prepared for.

2

Pack for fitness

Make some preparation ahead of your trip, research hotels or nearby fitness facilities and pack accordingly. In addition to travellers exercise necessities, your gear can include:

Essentials:

  • Sport shoes
  • Sport clothing
  • Reusable water bottle with a filter
  • Swimsuit
  • Yoga mat
  • Smartphone or tablet
  • Headphones

To consider:

  • Resistance band
  • Jump-rope
  • TRX
  • Hand grips
  • other light, small equipment you can fit into your suitcase

Keep active as you go - be flexible and focus on favourite activities

When you arrive at your destination, set the tone for the trip by working out right away or head for a walk – even if it’s only a brisk walk to check the area. If this is not doable, plan time for your next training and handle it as if it is an important appointment, as it is.

Walking is a low-impact activity that might be done indoors or outside and needs no equipment. Walk through the airport’s terminals, hotel or conference center’s hallways. Take the stairway. Or, take your stroll outside to explore the city. Talk with the hotel about safe walking or jogging paths around.
