Hair Porosity easily explained

Hair Porosity Doesn't Have To Be Hard.

Porosity simply determines how well your hair can retain and absorb moisture.

The popular classification you will find on the internet for hair porosity divided into three levels:

  • low porosity,
  • medium/normal porosity,
  • and high porosity.

It all depends on your hair cuticles …

Hair cuticles in low porosity hair are tightly linked together, while those in normal porosity hair are slightly less tightly bound. Following the logic, Hair cuticle in high porosity hair is more widely spread.

According to American board-certified hair colourists instead of a level, you will get a grade (Yes grade, almost like in school) from 1 extreme low porosity to 5 extreme high porosity.

1# Hair porosity float test

How possibly can you tell the porosity of hair with water?

You will need: a bowl or glass of water and clean, dry hair.

Instruction:

A. Shampoo and rinse your hair to remove product build-up.

B. Save clean hair that fell out under the shower (Do not need to pull it out of your scalp).

Leave it to dry in some clean place.

C. Place single hair (clean and dry) in a bowl of water.

D. Wait about 5 minutes.

E. Observe the degree of immersion. It is the degree of immersion that will determine the porosity of your hair.

Results:

If the hair falls to the very bottom – it should mean that the hair cuticles are very parted and soak up water. This is a sign that your hair has a high porosity.

If the hair sinks slowly and stops more or less in the middle of the glass – it means that the hair is moderately porous.

If the hair remains on the water’s surface, it means that the hair does not absorb water and has low porosity.

The hair porosity float test is one of the most popularIs it reliable? Many hair experts do not agree…

2# Hair porosity spray test.

How to determine your hair porosity level using a spray bottle?
With a spray bottle, diffuse tap water on a strand of hair and observe how it reacts (hair should be clean and dry without extra products like conditioner, mousse or hair spray)
– if water immediately sink into the hair – it’s an indication of a high porosity level
– water remaining on top of the hair –is indicating a low porosity level

It’s the next famous Internet test, is it working?
It makes sense. How your hair absorbs water is a significant factor in determining porosity — merely, not only one. If you see the water drops on top of the single hair, it’s mean you have an extremely low porosity level (Grade 1). It’s very rare, but it happens.

3# Manual hair porosity test

How to check the porosity of hair by touch:

When your hair feels soft and smooth in touch – it most likely has low porosity.
When you feel a slight unevenness and roughness while running your hand through hair – it indicates that your hair is medium porosity.
On the other hand, hair that is rough and dry to the touch, as well as hair, often alter with heat (drying, sun, straightening, curling iron) or chemically (perm, colouring) – will have high porosity.

The floating test is viral, and you will find it everywhere. However, the second and third tests will give you a much more reliable result.
Here you will find characteristics of every porosity: the bonus method you can mix with the ones above is to analyse the features of every hair porosity and determine which category your hair is following.
